Linhart, Jakub ; Boštíková, Vanda (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
Thesis title: Availability of critical medicines in the Czech Republic - dependence and resilience of supply chains Author: Jakub Linhart Thesis supervisor: prof. RNDr. Vanda Boštíková, Ph.D. Master thesis Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Department of Security Studies Department of Security Studies, Faculty of Security Studies, Charles University Prague 2023 Abstract The SARS-Cov-2 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of supply chains in the pharmaceutical industry. The first research question of this thesis concerns the location of manufacturing capacity for selected critical drugs. The drugs were selected based on the health status of the population and the prevalence of common diseases. The second research question concerns the preparedness of the security system for large-scale disruptions in the supply of pharmaceuticals. In this paper, the author drew on expert interviews and open sources. Another key source was data provided by the State Institute for Drug Control and the Institute of Population Protection of Lázně Bohdaneč. The results of the thesis indicate a substantial Indian and Chinese production for the selected critical drugs, with significant differences between the drugs. Based on the results of the thesis, the author found shortcomings in crisis preparedness for the...
Entry of New Product on the Pharmaceutical Market
Mašát, Petr ; Kostřiba, Jan (advisor) ; Kotlářová, Jana (referee)
This thesis is focused on a private brand of food supplements called IPC COMPLEX. IPC COMPLEX is produced by company Pharmaceutical Corporaration, a.s., and has been freshly introduced in the Czech market. The paper aims to assess production costs and sales in 2013, to calculate mark-up, margin and total gross profit. A comparison of sales with the rival products in each category follows. The evaluation is also subjected to meet the balance sheet established before entering the market. Moreover, the aims of the management are assessed together with return on investments and presumed positive impact on management of the society. The research focuses on monitoring the private brand. The data - provided exclusively for this research, were collected in 2013 and represent all 42 pharmacies owned by the chain IPC in the Czech Republic. The thesis tries to evaluate economic impacts of private brand on the pharmaceutical market for food supplements. These consequences are compared with impacts of private brands in other fields. Generally, the impact is believed to be positive and to be beneficial for powerful retail chains. Despite the minor failures, this thesis proved that a private brand of food supplements can have the very same positive impact on the Czech pharmaceutical market. The private brand has...
Current Patent Strategies in Pharmaceutical Industry and their Impact on EU Competition Law Policies
Molitorisová, Alexandra ; Dobřichovský, Tomáš (advisor) ; Pítra, Vladimír (referee)
The thesis reviews current patent strategies of original pharmaceutical companies and their tangled role in the fabric of European pharmaceutical innovation and competition. It addresses several components of the European pharmaceutical industry such as regulatory framework, patent filing and dispute strategies and competition law. It argues that patent law is embedded in a broader competition law framework however plays on a separate field where it governs primarily the entry to its exclusive space by market actors. However it asserts that competition law should serve as a time referee for the patent law playfield and check if the abusive prolongation of exclusive patent position does not occur. The thesis deliberates that in view of ever rising number of patent applications, abuse of the patent system may become symptomatic to the system. The Commission data presented in the Final Report on the pharmaceutical sector inquiry are again inspected. Although data should be used with caution, it revealed a good quantitative base for assessment of a system which seemingly becomes more entropic, complex and susceptible to abuse. Therefore the underlying principles in both patent and competition law should be upheld more strongly than ever. It is the principle of fairness that should have normative force...

The attitude towards patentability of genetic modifications and cloning is evaluated more closely. Furthermore the requirements of the gene's...

Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Biophysics and Physical Chemistry Candidate: Matěj Rücker Supervisor: Ing. Martin Drastík, Ph.D. Title: Stevia rebaudiana - food and pharmaceutical industry applications The first part of this thesis deals with the description of the plant and its substances, the most important are steviolglycosides, especially stevioside and rebaudioside A. In the next part, the utilization in the food industry and connected legislation is described. The harmfulness of the refined sugar is outlined as well. Application in the pharmacy is not so widespread, therefore this chapter deals primarily with the effects of steviolglycosides. Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni and steviolglycosides have great potential to replace sugar and other sweeteners. Due to their beneficial effects, they are very popular among researchers, so we can look forward to their widespread application in food and pharmaceutical industry in the near future. Pharmaceutical Industry and Healthcare Policy
Babilon-Crockett, Max ; Háva, Petr (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Martin (referee)
This thesis is concerned with assessing the involvement of the pharmaceutical industry with the United States' health system. We will consider the role that the industry plays in the greater system, and how its activities influence the environment around it. This is done through a case study, in the context of the United States experiencing a so-called "opioid epidemic." This crisis is a serious problem for the health system, and society as a whole, which predominantly involves prescription pharmaceuticals. We will undertake an examination of the pharmaceutical industry's relationship with that crisis through a strong reliance on critical discourse analysis, rooted in systems theory. Despite being a critical component in the American health system, and the one directly responsible for the creation of pharmaceuticals, we will see that the industry is predominantly treated as an ally in addressing the opioid epidemic, rather than complicit in its emergence. This indicates that the industry successfully influences the discourse surrounding its role and responsibilities as a component of the health system. Keywords Pharmaceutical industry, lobbying, healthcare, PhRMA, health system, opioid, prescription drugs
